The Battle Between Śālva and the Vṛṣṇis
A Batalha entre Śālva e os Vṛṣṇis
This chapter relates how the demon Śālva acquired a huge and terrifying airship, how he used it to attack the Vṛṣṇis in Dvārakā, and how Lord Pradyumna was taken from the battlefield during the fighting that ensued.
Este capítulo relata como o demônio Śālva adquiriu uma enorme e aterradora aeronave, como ele a usou para atacar os Vṛṣṇis em Dvārakā e como o Senhor Pradyumna foi retirado do campo de batalha durante a luta subsequente.
Śālva was one of the kings who had been defeated at the time of Rukmiṇī-devī’s marriage. Having vowed then that he would rid the earth of all the Yādavas, he began worshiping Lord Śiva each day by eating only a palmful of dust. After a year had passed, Śiva appeared before Śālva and asked him to choose a benediction. Śālva begged for a flying machine that could go anywhere and that would strike terror into the hearts of demigods, demons and humans alike. Lord Śiva granted this request and had Maya Dānava construct for Śālva a flying iron city named Saubha. Śālva took this vehicle to Dvārakā, where he and his huge army laid siege to the city. From his airplane Śālva bombarded Dvārakā with tree trunks, boulders and other missiles, and he produced a mighty whirlwind that obscured everything with dust.
Śālva era um dos reis que foram derrotados por ocasião do casamento de Rukmiṇī-devī. Tendo prometido que exterminaria da Terra todos os Yādavas, ele passou a adorar o senhor Śiva todos os dias através de uma prática que consistia em comer apenas um punhado de pó. Depois de passado um ano, Śiva apareceu diante de Śālva e pediu-lhe que escolhesse uma bênção. Śālva pediu uma máquina voadora que pudesse ir a qualquer lugar e que lançasse terror nos corações tanto dos semideuses e demônios como dos seres humanos. O senhor Śiva concedeu esse pedido e solicitou a Maya Dānava que construísse para Śālva uma cidade de ferro voadora chamada Saubha. A bordo deste veículo, Śālva foi para Dvārakā, onde ele e seu enorme exército sitiaram a cidade. A partir de seu aeroplano, Śālva bombardeou Dvārakā com troncos de árvores, blocos de pedra e outros projéteis, e também produziu um poderoso turbilhão que cobriu tudo de poeira.
When Pradyumna, Sātyaki and the other Yadu heroes saw the plight of Dvārakā and her residents, they went out to do battle with Śālva’s forces. Pradyumna, the best of warriors, destroyed with His divine weapons all of Śālva’s illusory magic, and He also bewildered Śālva himself. Thus Śālva’s airplane began wandering aimlessly on the earth, in the sky and on the tops of mountains. But then a follower of Śālva’s named Dyumān struck Pradyumna on the chest with his club, whereupon Pradyumna’s chariot driver, thinking his master seriously injured, carried Him from the battlefield. But Pradyumna quickly regained consciousness and sharply criticized His driver for doing this.
Ao verem a situação caótica de Dvārakā e de seus residentes, Pradyumna, Sātyaki e os outros heróis Yadus saíram para combater as forças de Śālva. Pradyumna, o melhor dos guerreiros, destruiu com Suas armas divinas toda a mágica ilusória de Śālva, também atordoou o próprio Śālva. Dessa maneira, o aeroplano de Śālva começou a vagar sem rumo na terra, no céu e no topo das montanhas. Mas então um seguidor de Śālva chamado Dyumān, atingiu Pradyumna no peito com sua maça, ao que o quadrigário de Pradyumna, pensando que seu mestre estava seriamente ferido, retirou-O do campo de batalha. Mas Pradyumna logo recuperou a consciência e criticou asperamente Seu cocheiro por ter feito isso.

- Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: Now please hear, O King, another wondrous deed performed by Lord Kṛṣṇa, who appeared in His humanlike body to enjoy transcendental pastimes. Hear how He killed the master of Saubha.

- Śukadeva Gosvāmī disse: Agora, por favor, ouve, ó rei, outra maravilhosa façanha executada pelo Senhor Kṛṣṇa, que apareceu em Seu corpo semelhante ao humano para desfrutar de passatempos transcendentais. Ouve como Ele matou o senhor de Saubha.
- Text 2:
- Śālva was a friend of Śiśupāla’s. When he attended the wedding of Rukmiṇī, the Yadu warriors defeated him in battle, along with Jarāsandha and the other kings.
- VERSO 2:
- Śālva era amigo de Śiśupāla. Durante a cerimônia de casamento de Rukmiṇī, os guerreiros Yadus derrotaram-no em combate, juntamente com Jarāsandha e os outros reis.
- Text 4:
- Having thus made his vow, the foolish King proceeded to worship Lord Paśupati [Śiva] as his deity by eating a handful of dust each day, and nothing more.
- VERSO 4:
- Tendo assim feito esse voto, o tolo rei passou a adorar o Senhor Paśupati [Śiva] como sua deidade através de uma prática que consistia em comer por dia um punhado de pó, e nada mais.
- Text 5:
- The great Lord Umāpati is known as “he who is quickly pleased,” yet only at the end of a year did he gratify Śālva, who had approached him for shelter, by offering him a choice of benedictions.

- O ilustre senhor Umāpati é conhecido como “aquele que logo se satisfaz”; contudo, só depois de um ano é que ele recompensou Śālva, que se aproximara dele em busca de abrigo, oferecendo-lhe a bênção de sua escolha.

- Śālva chose a vehicle that could be destroyed by neither demigods, demons, humans, Gandharvas, Uragas nor Rākṣasas, that could travel anywhere he wished to go, and that would terrify the Vṛṣṇis.

- Śālva escolheu como bênção um veículo que não pudesse ser destruído por semideuses, demônios, seres humanos, Gandharvas, Uragas ou Rākṣasas; um veículo que pudesse viajar para qualquer lugar que ele quisesse, e que aterrorizasse os Vṛṣṇis.

- Lord Śiva said, “So be it.” On his order, Maya Dānava, who conquers his enemies’ cities, constructed a flying iron city named Saubha and presented it to Śālva.

- O senhor Śiva disse: “Que assim seja.” Por sua ordem, Maya Dānava, que conquista as cidades de seus inimigos, construiu uma cidade de ferro voadora chamada Saubha e deu-a de presente a Śālva.

- This unassailable vehicle was filled with darkness and could go anywhere. Upon obtaining it, Śālva went to Dvārakā, remembering the Vṛṣṇis’ enmity toward him.

- Este veículo inexpugnável era repleto de trevas e podia ir a qualquer lugar. Após obtê-lo, Śālva foi para Dvārakā, lembrando-se da inimizade dos Vṛṣṇis por ele.
- Texts 9-11:
- Śālva besieged the city with a large army, O best of the Bharatas, decimating the outlying parks and gardens, the mansions along with their observatories, towering gateways and surrounding walls, and also the public recreational areas. From his excellent airship he threw down a torrent of weapons, including stones, tree trunks, thunderbolts, snakes and hailstones. A fierce whirlwind arose and blanketed all directions with dust.

- Com um enorme exército, Śālva sitiou a cidade, ó melhor dos Bharatas, dizimando os parques e jardins adjacentes, as mansões e seus observatórios, portais formidáveis e paredes circunjacentes, e também as áreas públicas de lazer. De sua excelente aeronave, ele arremetia torrentes de armas, tais como pedras, troncos de árvores, raios, cobras e granizo. Surgiu, então, um feroz turbilhão que cobriu todas as direções com uma camada de poeira.

- Thus terribly tormented by the airship Saubha, Lord Kṛṣṇa’s city had no peace, O King, just like the earth when it was attacked by the three aerial cities of the demons.

- Terrivelmente atormentada assim pela aeronave Saubha, a cidade do Senhor Kṛṣṇa não encontrava paz, ó rei, tal qual a Terra quando foi atacada pelas três cidades aéreas dos demônios.
- Texts 14-15:
- The chief commanders of the chariot warriors — Sātyaki, Cārudeṣṇa, Sāmba, Akrūra and his younger brothers, along with Hārdikya, Bhānuvinda, Gada, Śuka and Sāraṇa — went out of the city with many other eminent bowmen, all girded in armor and protected by contingents of soldiers riding on chariots, elephants and horses, and also by companies of infantry.
- VERSOS 14-15:
- Os principais comandantes dos guerreiros de quadriga – Sātyaki, Cārudeṣṇa, Sāmba, Akrūra e seus irmãos mais novos, bem como Hārdikya, Bhānuvinda, Gada, Śuka e Sāraṇa – saíram da cidade com muitos outros arqueiros eminentes, todos munidos de armadura e protegidos por contingentes de soldados montados em quadrigas, elefantes e cavalos, e também por companhias de infantaria.

- A tumultuous, hair-raising battle then commenced between Śālva’s forces and the Yadus. It equaled the great battles between the demons and demigods.

- With His divine weapons Pradyumna instantly destroyed all of Śālva’s magic illusions, in the same way that the warm rays of the sun dissipate the darkness of night.

- Com Suas armas divinas, Pradyumna destruiu em um instante todas as ilusões mágicas de Śālva, do mesmo modo que os quentes raios solares dissipam a escuridão da noite.
- Texts 18-19:
- Lord Pradyumna’s arrows all had gold shafts, iron heads and perfectly smooth joints. With twenty-five of them He struck down Śālva’s commander-in-chief [Dyumān], and with one hundred He struck Śālva himself. Then He pierced Śālva’s officers with one arrow each, his chariot drivers with ten arrows each, and his horses and other carriers with three arrows each.
- VERSOS 18-19:
- Todas as flechas do Senhor Pradyumna tinham haste de ouro, ponta de ferro e junta perfeitamente lisa. Com vinte e cinco delas, Ele derrubou o comandante-em-chefe de Śālva [Dyumān], e atingiu o próprio Śālva com outras cem. Então, trespassou cada um dos oficiais de Śālva com uma flecha, cada quadrigário com dez flechas, e seus cavalos e outras montarias com três flechas cada.

- At one moment the magic airship built by Maya Dānava appeared in many identical forms, and the next moment it was again only one. Sometimes it was visible, and sometimes not. Thus Śālva’s opponents could never be sure where it was.

- From one moment to the next the Saubha airship appeared on the earth, in the sky, on a mountain peak or in the water. Like a whirling, flaming baton, it never remained in any one place.

- De um instante a outro, a aeronave Saubha aparecia na terra, no céu, em um pico de montanha ou na água. Como um bastão flamejante a girar, ela jamais permanecia no mesmo lugar.
- Text 24:
- Śālva became bewildered upon seeing his army and aerial city thus harassed by his enemy’s arrows, which struck like fire and the sun and were as intolerable as snake venom.

- Śālva ficou perplexo ao ver seu exército e cidade aérea atormentados assim pelas flechas do inimigo, que feriam como o fogo e o Sol e eram tão intoleráveis como o veneno de uma cobra.

- Because the heroes of the Vṛṣṇi clan were eager for victory in this world and the next, they did not abandon their assigned posts on the battlefield, even though the downpour of weapons hurled by Śālva’s commanders tormented them.

- Porque almejavam a vitória neste e no outro mundo, os heróis do clã Vṛṣṇi não abandonavam seus designados postos no campo de batalha, ainda que o dilúvio de armas lançadas pelos comandantes de Śālva os atormentasse.

- Śālva’s minister Dyumān, previously wounded by Śrī Pradyumna, now ran up to Him and, roaring loudly, struck Him with his club of black steel.

- Dyumān, o ministro de Śālva, ferido antes por Śrī Pradyumna, precipitou-se agora em Sua direção e, rugindo alto, atingiu-O com sua maça de aço negro.
- Text 27:
- Pradyumna’s driver, the son of Dāruka, thought that his valiant master’s chest had been shattered by the club. Knowing well his religious duty, he removed Pradyumna from the battlefield.
- VERSO 27:
- O cocheiro de Pradyumna, o filho de Dāruka, pensou que o peito de seu valoroso chefe fora destroçado pela maça. Conhecendo bem seu dever religioso, ele retirou Pradyumna do campo de batalha.
- Text 28:
- Quickly regaining consciousness, Lord Kṛṣṇa’s son Pradyumna said to His charioteer, “O driver, this is abominable — for Me to have been removed from the battlefield!

- Recuperando logo a consciência, Pradyumna, o filho do Senhor Kṛṣṇa, disse a Seu quadrigário: “Ó cocheiro, isto Me é abominável: ter sido retirado do campo de batalha!”
- Text 29:
- “Except for Me, no one born in the Yadu dynasty has ever been known to abandon the battlefield. My reputation has now been stained by a driver who thinks like a eunuch.
- VERSO 29:
- “Jamais se ouviu falar que alguém nascido na dinastia Yadu, a não ser Eu, tenha abandonado o campo de batalha. Agora, Minha reputação ficou maculada por causa de um cocheiro que pensa como um eunuco.”
- Text 30:
- “What will I say to My fathers, Rāma and Keśava, when I return to Them after having simply fled the battle? What can I tell Them that will befit My honor?
- VERSO 30:
- “O que direi a Meus pais, Rāma e Keśava, quando Eu Me encontrar com Eles depois de ter simplesmente fugido da batalha? O que Lhes posso dizer que seja condizente com Minha honra?”
- Text 31:
- “Certainly My sisters-in-law will laugh at Me and say, ‘O hero, tell us how in the world Your enemies turned You into such a coward in battle.’”
- VERSO 31:
- “Com certeza, Minhas cunhadas rirão de Mim e dirão: ‘Ó herói, conta-nos como é que Teus inimigos fizeram de Ti semelhante covarde na batalha.’”
- Text 32:
- The driver replied: O long-lived one, I have done this knowing full well my prescribed duty. O my Lord, the chariot driver must protect the master of the chariot when he is in danger, and the master must also protect his driver.
- VERSO 32:
- O cocheiro respondeu: Ó longevo, fiz isso sabendo muito bem meu dever prescrito. Ó meu Senhor, o quadrigário deve proteger o amo da quadriga quando este está em perigo, e o amo também deve proteger seu quadrigário.
- Text 33:
- With this rule in mind, I removed You from the battlefield, since You had been struck unconscious by Your enemy’s club and I thought You were seriously injured.
- VERSO 33:
- Com esta regra em mente, retirei-Te do campo de batalha, pois foras golpeado pela maça de Teu inimigo, e, estando Tu inconsciente, pensei que estivesses seriamente ferido.
